Smile design is a treatment plan rather than one procedure. We start from a clinical assessment and from what you would like to change, and use that to decide which combination of treatments makes sense in your case.

The plan may include whitening, veneers, high-aesthetic composite work, gum contouring and, in some cases, orthodontics first to correct the position of the teeth before any aesthetic work begins.

It suits people who are unhappy with the colour, shape or size of their teeth, or who have worn edges, gaps between teeth or a lot of visible gum when they smile. Not every case needs the same thing, and not every case is solved with aesthetics alone: sometimes decay, inflamed gums or a bite problem has to be treated first.

What a smile design can include

Each plan is built from whatever the case requires. The most common elements are:

• Tooth whitening. Lightens the natural shade of the tooth. It usually comes first, so the rest of the treatment is planned around the final colour.
• Veneers. In composite or ceramic, they cover the visible face of the tooth and correct shape, colour, worn edges and small differences in position.
• High-aesthetic composite. Built directly onto the tooth in the surgery to close gaps, rebuild edges or correct specific defects.
• Gum contouring. Adjusts the gum line where it covers too much of the tooth or the margin looks uneven from one tooth to the next.
• Orthodontics first. Where the underlying issue is tooth position, moving the teeth first usually allows a more conservative result with less tooth reduction afterwards.

Digital smile design

Before any tooth is touched we take photographs, X-rays and either models or a scan of your mouth. A digital proposal is then built on that record: the shape, length and proportion of the teeth are drawn in relation to your lips and your face.

The point is that you can see and discuss the proposal before anything starts, and that the dentist can check whether the plan is feasible. In some cases the proposal is transferred into the mouth as a temporary trial, so you can see the volume and shape on your own teeth.

Digital design is a planning and communication tool. It is a guide, not a guaranteed result: the proposal can change if the clinical assessment calls for it.

How the process runs

The number of visits depends on how many treatments the plan includes.

• Assessment. Clinical examination, X-rays, photographs and a conversation about what bothers you and what you expect.
• Preparatory phase. Anything needed before aesthetic work is dealt with first: cleaning, decay, inflamed gums, root canal treatment or bite adjustments.
• Planning. Digital design, a temporary trial where appropriate, and agreement on the plan, the order of treatments and the approximate number of visits.
• Treatment. The agreed treatments are carried out in order, normally beginning with whitening.
• Reviews. Follow-up visits to check fit, gum health and comfort when biting.

Aftercare

A smile design needs maintenance. Brushing three times a day, flossing and regular professional cleanings protect both the aesthetic work and the gum around it.

It helps to go easy on coffee, tea, dark fizzy drinks, red wine and cigarettes, all of which stain enamel and composite alike. If you clench or grind your teeth, we will most likely recommend a night guard.
