Oral hygiene education

Teaching the technique properly is what makes every other treatment last. It is the part almost nobody gets explained calmly.

Almost everyone brushes their teeth. Very few people have ever had it explained in detail, with their own mouth in front of them and someone pointing out the spots they keep missing.

That is what this appointment is: showing you where plaque collects, why it collects there, and what to change so it stops.

It suits children who are learning, teenagers in braces, adults who have had gum problems, and anyone caring for an older person or someone with limited mobility.

What the appointment covers

  • Brushing technique. Angle, movement, pressure and sequence, so no area is left out. Too much force does damage of its own: it wears the tooth and pushes the gum back.
  • Flossing. How to get in without hurting the gum and how to wrap each tooth, which is where the difference lies.
  • Choosing a brush and paste. Bristle firmness, head size, and what to look for in a toothpaste for your situation.
  • Extra aids. Interdental brushes, rinses and tongue cleaners, where they are needed. Not everyone needs them.
  • Habits and diet. How often sugar appears, acidic drinks, and when brushing actually helps.
  • Special cases. Braces, implants, dentures or sensitive gums all need specific adjustments to the routine.

How we do it

We work on your mouth, not a generic model. We look at where plaque or inflammation is, show it to you, and practise the technique there and then so you leave knowing what it feels like when it is done right.

With children the appointment is pitched to their age: plain language, kept short, and with the accompanying adult involved, because up to a certain age brushing is still the adult's responsibility.

There are no magic formulas or miracle products. What changes results is consistency and technique.

Why it is worth it

Gingivitis and decay are, in the great majority of cases, preventable. A professional cleaning every six months clears what has built up; your daily routine decides what state you arrive in.

If you have just finished a course of treatment, this matters even more: it is what protects the investment you have already made.

Frequently asked questions

General advice is given at the end of a cleaning, yes. This appointment goes further: time is set aside to review your technique, practise it, and work through the particulars of your own mouth.

Usually a single short appointment. Where there are braces, dentures or compromised gums, a follow-up can be worthwhile to check the routine has bedded in.

Yes, and it helps if the accompanying adult comes in too, because until roughly age eight to ten brushing still needs supervision and help from an adult.

Generally soft bristles and a small head. An electric brush helps people who press too hard or have limited dexterity, but a manual brush used well works perfectly. We will go over it for your case.
