Fluoride works on the enamel: it makes it more resistant to the acid bacteria produce after eating, and helps remineralise areas where decay is only just beginning.
At Higienista Oral we provide fluoride treatment for children and teenagers aged 1 to 17. That is the range where it does the most good: baby teeth are arriving, changing or being replaced, and newly erupted adult teeth are particularly vulnerable during their first years in the mouth.
It takes only a few minutes, with no needles and no pain.
Who benefits most
Any child in that age range can have it, but it is particularly worthwhile when:
- There has been decay before, in the child or in their siblings.
- Brushing is not yet consistent or still needs supervision.
- Sweets, juice or fizzy drinks are a regular part of the diet.
- The first adult molars are coming through, around age six.
- A teenager is wearing braces, which make cleaning harder.
- White spots are visible on the enamel, which are the first warning of decay.
How it is applied
The teeth are cleaned first, because fluoride works better on a plaque-free surface.
It is then applied as a gel or a varnish, depending on age and circumstances. Varnish is painted straight onto the tooth with a small brush and sets on contact with saliva; gel is held in trays for a few minutes.
Afterwards we ask the child not to eat or drink for a short period, and to avoid hard or very hot food for the rest of the day. We give you the exact instructions at the end, based on what was used.
How often
Usually every six months, alongside the check-up and cleaning. For children at high risk of decay it may be recommended every three or four months.
Fluoride does not replace brushing or diet: it is a reinforcement. That is why the appointment always includes a few minutes going over brushing with the child and whoever brings them.
